Music in the Classroom
Currently, the majority of elementary school students in Canada are deprived of music education. Studies show that music education improves:
Physical Skills:
Coordination
Spatial intelligence
Fine motor skills
Cognitive Skills:
Working memory
Problem solving
Imagination
Social/Emotional Skills:
Emotional Development
Confidence
Perseverance
A school system with a focus on inclusion understands that these benefits should not only be available for students who come from families wealthy enough to afford expensive instruments and music lessons. Music instruction and ensembles improve student engagement, provide opportunities to learn teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills, and much more. Ensembles such as Orff (various pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments), recorder and ukulele are perfect for elementary aged students.

I have spent the last 5 years working on a program to help educators in the public school system understand the Ontario Music Curriculum enough to teach it, and to give them the tools they need to teach it effectively. It is by no means a perfect solution. My program cannot fix the lack of funding or the lack of specialized teachers. What it CAN do is dramatically improve the music education of our students.
This course will explain the Ontario Music Curriculum, teach you musical theory, music appreciation, and provide you with tools to teach music in your classroom.
The Ontario Music Curriculum is broken down into six categories: Duration, Pitch, Dynamics and other Expressive Controls, Timbre, Texture/Harmony, and Form. This program will delve into each category, grade by grade, explaining all of the necessary terms and concepts while at the same time, provide teaching tools for use in the classroom. Although this course follows the Ontario Curriculum, it is possible to use it to support music education in other provinces and states. Although the organization is likely different, the music theory and subject matter will be the same.
Remember: Music Education Matters. The musical knowledge you are sharing with your students will benefit them in years to come and in many aspects of their education. We all have to start somewhere!
